NBHA Point System
Dogs must be registered with the American Field/UKC in THE FIELD DOG STUD BOOK. There are some exceptions related to puppies and or pending registrations.
DOG AND HANDLER OF THE YEAR
Section 1
The calendar year for tabulating points for the high point dog of each stake starts June 1st and
ends on May 31st of the following year. Any trial held in May has a two-week grace period.
Section 2
To receive points for dog of the year award a dog must be registered, with complete
information on the essential data form.
Section 3
a. NBHA Dog of the Year, minimum requirements in each category. Dogs will need to
have placed a minimum of three (3) times to be eligible to be recognized as a NBHA
Dog of the Year, with three (3) or more placements the dog with the highest point total
will become the Dog of the Year winner, the second highest point total will be the
runner-up Dog of the Year.
b. NBHA Handler of the Year, minimum requirements in each category. Handlers will
need to have placed a minimum of three (3) times to be eligible to be recognized as a
NBHA Handler of the Year, with three (3) or more placements the handler with the
highest point total will become the Handler of the Year winner, the second highest
point total will be the runner-up NBHA Handler of the Year.
c. NBHA Youth Handler of the Year, is the accumulation of points earned in all
stakes Open and Amateur. There are no weighted points, all events are three (3)
points for first place, two (2) points for second place, one (1) point for third place, and
1 point if a stake has a fourth place. At the end of the field trial season the Youth
handler with the highest point total will receive the Youth Handler of the Year Award.
Youth Handler with the second highest point total will receive the Runner-up Youth
Handler of the Year.
Section 4
DOG POINT SYSTEM – Open & Amateur Stakes
Club Trials
- 1st place = 3 x dogs run
- 2nd place = 2 x dogs run
- 3rd place = 1 x dogs run
State Classics & Regional Championships
- 1st place = 7 x dogs run
- 2nd place = 5 x dogs run
- 3rd place = 3 x dogs run
National Championships
- 1st place or Champion = 10 x dogs run
- 2nd place or runner-up = 7 x dogs run
- 3rd place = 5 x dogs run
Futurity (Open Derby)/ Puppy Classic (Open Puppy)
- 1st place = 10 x dogs run
- 2nd place = 7 x dogs run
- 3rd place = 5 x dogs run
- 4th place = 4 x dogs run
Section 5
HANDLER POINT SYSTEM – Open & Amateur Stakes

- 1st place = 3 points
- 2nd place = 2 points
- 3rd place = 1 point
State Classics (Shooting Dog & Derby)
- 1st place = 5 points
