Doug Meyer

Doug Meyer of Tonganoxie, Kansas has been a supporter of the National Bird Hunters Association since 1986. When Doug resided in the Murfreesboro, Tennessee area he entered in the first NBHA Futurity in 1987 with his young pointer male Chief’s River Guardian. This dog was a call back finalist and fueled Doug’s commitment in serving the NBHA. Doug became the reporter in 1988 for the NBHA Futurity and the Jerry Kilgore Puppy Classic. After the 1989 Futurity, Doug had left the Tennessee area and had moved to Temple, Texas then in 2000 he found his current home in Tonganoxie, Kansas. No matter where Doug lived, he was committed to report the NBHA Futurity. Doug’s reporting spans more than a twenty-year time period.

Besides a reporter for the Futurity and the Jerry Kilgore Puppy Classic, Doug has served as a Judge at every level of NBHA competition. Doug has chaired several NBHA championships and Doug has provided his farm in Kansas as a place to run NBHA field trials.

Mr. Meyer served as the NBHA President for four years, from 2009 – 2012. During this time, it could be said that it was a rebuilding era for the NBHA as the organization had implemented some important rule changes. Mandatory backing and retrieving requirements in shooting dog stakes were eliminated. Another rule change was the adoption of the Handicap rule that required a state placard certification.

Doug has taken great pride in training and handling his own dogs that he competes with in field trials. Doug won the Jerry Kilgore Puppy Classic in 1993 with his pointer female Wrong Side O’Memphis. As a breeder Doug has incorporated the Greypointe prefix to his dogs. In 2008 Doug’s, Greypointe Gladiador was the second runner-up in the NBHA 22nd Futurity. Gladiador went on to win Runner-up in the NBHA Open Invitational Championship in 2010 and he won the NBHA Breeders Championship in 2013. Doug has won the AFTCA Walking Championship once and placed Runner-up twice. Doug now competes in All-Age stakes with his dog’s and occasionally he will still enter in a NBHA trial. All of his dog’s pedigrees go back to his foundation female Wrong Side O’Memphis.

Doug Meyer is a true sportsman and mentor with newcomers to the NBHA. Doug’s commitment to the NBHA serves him with the highest honor recognized by the NBHA as a member to the NBHA Hall of Fame.
