Trail Boss Grover was purchased as a pup at seven weeks of age, and was sole owned and handled by Tim Penn. "Grover's" first and last placements were at NBHA trials. "Grover's" first placement was a second place Amateur Derby in the fall of 1987 and his last was a third place ASD in the spring of 1997. Grover competed in field trials for a span of ten years and had placed 32 times before retiring. Grover competed also in horseback trials, ABHA, and AFTCA walking trials, making him a very diverse competitor. Grover was mainly entered in NBHA trials where he had placed a total of 23 times. Some of Trail Boss Grover's most impressive honors were. Winner of the 1993 NBHA Midwest Reg. Championship; Runner-up 1994 Reg. 5 AFTCA Walking Shooting Dog Championship; Call-back dog 1994 NBHA National Open Championship; Missouri State Bird Hunters Association, Amateur Shooting Dog of the Year 94-95; Grover has placed in four State Classics and has also placed two times in horseback shooting dog stakes.

Trail Boss Grover has influenced his genetics within the field trial community, being bred to very sparingly his impact has carried through several generations of his descendants. His grandson Penrosa Knox won the NBHA Open Invitational Breeders Championship in 2011 and has been named runner-up champion four other times. Grover's great grandson Penrosa Stoneyox has placed in the NBHA Futurity 2011 was the NBHA R/U Open Derby Dog of the Year 2010-2011 and won the AFTCA National Walking Shooting Dog Championship 2011-2012.
