Hosted by the Missouri Bird Hunters Association. This year's NBHA National Amateur Championship December 3 and 4th was held on the beautifully manicured grounds near Grovesprings Mo. The Sportsman's Association grounds are the best Missouri grounds we can offer. This year's grounds were a little thicker on the west end, but did not slow the dogs or handlers.
We drew 16 Shooting Dogs, 9 outstanding derbies, and only 4 puppies. They came from Michigan down to Texas to South Carolina.
This year's weather was outstanding for a December trial. Our highs were in the 60s and lows in the 40s. God blessed us with great dogs, handlers, helpers, and judges.
The birds were plentiful. We plant our birds and put back every brace but the prereleased coveys were found from start to finish. These exploding coveys put some great dogs back on the dog wagon.
With multiple dogs finishing on day one we would pull both winners from day two. I do apologize for losing my notes but this is what we came up.
Tim Penn and RU Champion Penrosa Hidncash SM were braced with Jeff Hainline and Hainlines Silver Star PF. Cash and Star are both very nice moving dogs. Released in front in the clubhouse we would find the by the cemetery on a divided find. Cash's second find would be a small covey. He looked good moving through the field holding the edges. We found him in the last field before crossing the road on another covey of 10 birds. After crossing the road he wouldn't go far. Standing tall in the first ditch he looked great for his handler. Tim had trouble flushing and had to relocate. Cash did a great job and Tim flushed 3 more birds. Entering Sycamore bottoms Cash looked good going away until slamming on the brakes for a single across from the big Sycamore. With all in order they continued on. Find number 6 was in a tall weed patch. As we crossed the dry creek bed Cash was standing again in the edge of a milo strip rock solid on a pair of bobs. Time ran out as he was working scent of more birds. Congrats Mr. Penn and Cash on your Runner up title.
The last brace of the day would bring up Klause Schmidt and Champion Magic Maggie Mae PF braced with Tim Penn and Penrosa Behrdevil PM. Maggie had some magic that morning. The brace started on the west side gravel road and would run back to the clubhouse. With the growth a little taller and thicket it was hard to keep track of the dogs. Maggie was doing some bird hunting. As we crossed a small branch into Sycamore bottoms we could see Maggie standing tall 200 yards to the front. You could tell Klaus was confident in his girl as he didn't get excited and kept the steady pace to Maggie. He flushed a pair for the rock solid Maggie. She didn't go far and stood a pair of bobs on the south side of the field. As we crossed the road Maggie was seen standing. A small covey was found early in the last brace but the birds had moved out. Maggie's 3rd find was on the opposite side of a small ditch. As Klaus was crossing to flush the birds exploded over Maggie's head. Rock solid again. She was doing a great job. With 10 minutes to go she was pointed in the creek back on the east side. With birds produced they would continue on. She would lock up again and her handler would flush another pair of birds. With 5 minutes to go she would continue her forward race, hitting the edges, looking great and still going strong. Congrats to Mr. Klaus Schmidt and Magic Maggie May on their great teamwork and Championship.
I would like to say it feels good to host a trial and see the joy it brings to the winners. We can't all win everytime so iam sorry about that. The Missouri club has some on the greatest guys that help where needed and never give it a second thought.
Thank you to our judges Mr. Kenny Snow and Mr. Ken Chenoweth. An outstanding job was done by these two gentleman judging the Shooting Dog, Derby, and Puppies.
Thank you to the Sportsman's Association for the use of their grounds. As usual everyone loved them.
Please support our sponsors everytime you possibly can. It takes great sponsorships to host these trials and we have the best. Gundog Supply, Gundog Central, Mule Brand Clothing, Garmin and our biggest supporter Purina Pro Plan. Purina always was above and beyond with their dogfood donations.
