2021 Breeders Invitational Article

The Breeders Championship would start Wednesday March 24th, 2021 at the beautiful grounds of Talbot Conservation area located near Mount Vernon, MO on Missouri off Highway 96. The judges for this prestigious event would be Tim Penn from Edina, MO and Andy Neria from Savonburg, KS. We drew 25 dogs for this Championship. With a planned kick off at 8:00 a.m. the birds planted, and the weather was cool with a slight breeze. This is not just an ordinary trial with certain criteria needed to be qualified to run so, we did have to turn a few dogs away.
7:59 Brace number one would be Mike Duvall's pointer female Stellar's Natural Disaster. She would have her 1st find 6 minutes in. Mike kicked up a pair of bobwhites and continued. At 19 we found her on point again a single was produced from the brush pile. We had her on point again at 24 still looking great on her birds. Mike kicked up another single and moved on. Bracemate Indian Creek Storm Chaser and Garry Malzone would finally get some bird contact 32 minutes. This is a pointer male that makes big moves Garry picked him up at 8:35
9:06 Brace number 2 was Klaus Schmidt and his pointer female Magic Maggie May and Dale Creek Tothe Max Setter male handled by Tom Waite. Maggie was 1st up only taking 4 minutes to be pointed in the 2nd field on the edge of the timber. Klaus had some trouble flushing and Maggie needed a relocation. She pinned the birds and looked great. Klaus produced a pair and they moved on. At 24 Maggie was picked up. Max hunted the country with 3 minutes to go Max had a pair in the brush and Tom put the birds in the air.
10:20 We would kick off Brace number 3 with Pure Confidence pointer male and Garry Malzone with bracemate setter male Emert's Show Me Mo handled by Karl Forsberg. Garry's pointer would be 1st to locate birds 6 minutes in. Mo would be seen backing and both dogs looked great. The pointer got a little excited and Gary picked him up at 10:32. Mo would continue hunting and pointing with tons of class and style. He would have 6 Well placed finds at 25 29 30 40 51 and 57.
11:30 Brace number 4 Raintree's Blue Moon red setter male and Tom Waite, something wasn't quite right and Tom picked him up. Bracemate Gun's Pistol Pete Setter male and Colby Tackett would have 7 nice finds 6, 19, 27, 32, 34, 42 and 51.
1:50 brace number 5 was our first after lunch. Indian Creek Alibi pointer female and Garry Malzone would have the course to themselves with bracemate�s owner Glenn Cumbie scratching his Jimfork's Black River pointer male. Ali would have 2 finds at 7 and 10 but would be picked up at 25-minute mark.
2:54 brace number 6 would be short lived with both dogs being picked up early. Mike Duvall and PF Thumper's Anything But would have to pieces of work before leaving. Tom Waite picked up red setter female Foxy Abralena at 19-minute mark.
3:46 Brace 7 would be quick for Emmet Sasser and Sasser's Elmer T Lee GSPM. This young shorthair is full of heart but couldn't take the easy temptation of birds that moved in the middle of the field and was picked up. Bracemate Erin's Deja Vu is a very nice setter female handled by Garry Malzone. She had a great race with 4 finds. 23, 29, 41, and 53. She runs and points with class and style.
8:03 with an inch of rain from the night before the grounds for the 1st brace of the day would be very sloppy. Dale Creek Gypsy Queen setter female handled by Tom Waite and Karl Forsberg Hello Dolly pointer female would be cut loose. Dolly's 1st find would be at 8:06. She showed nerves of steel taking a ton of pressure from her brace mate which would be picked up. Dolly later had a pair of birds in the brush pile at 8:25. At 8:35 Karl had trouble finding the bird Dolly had pointed but later pointed it out to the judges sitting in the back of a hollow tree. She would go on to have 3 more finds. This dog has a great future ahead of her.
9:12 Brace number 9 was released. Bob England setter female Diamond L Islander Girl was braced with Indian Creek Courageous Cat and Garry Malzone. In the judge's words Cat was turned loose with a look in her eyes saying I got this Garry just follow me and we will win. Cat was 1st to the birds at 9:19 with Sue backing. Sue pointed next in the brush pile. The flush by Bob was too much and she was picked up. Cat had been taking the edge and disappeared over the Hill. As we crossed the road at 9:40 she was standing high head and tail. With the sun shining on her, she was easy to spot. Garry flushed the birds with all in order. Eight minutes later as the gallery and judges road by a pointed Cat buried up in the brush point was called. Garry was able to move the little single buried in the brush. Watered then released Cat was still on a mission. Off through the open prairie she was making another huge move. At 10:02 Cat was found standing again. A pair of bobs were flushed on the pond dam for the girl on a mission. As time was called Cat was going away strong with power and style.
10:26 brace number 10 was Winkleman's Little Sugar pointer female and Mike Duvall. Bracemate Indian Creek Bocephus pointer male and Garry Malzone. At the breakaway both dogs were off with Sugar taking the right side and Bo the left. Both dogs were pointed at 6 minutes. After not seeing both for a spell they were found in front at 10:51 with Mike's pointer on the bird and Garry's backing. At 1108 Sugar was pointed again this time with a bird buried in the rock pile. Next was Bo 11:11 found on the pond dam. With birds produce they were off again. Sugar was found again at 11:15 in the thicket. Mike produced the birds and they were both off again. These two finished strong and to the front.
When 1:41 Bryce 11 would be Craigs Running Roxy pointer female and Craig Hiatt. Bracemate Tom Waite and Dale Creek Resurrection pointer male. At 11:55 Tom would pick up his pointer. Roxy would continue hunting hard trying to find her birds. At 12:05 she would lock one down for her handler Craig. At 12:10 she was pointed in the bottom of a deep draw. With 2 relocations needed a bird was never found. Roxy was picked up at 12:17.
After a short lunch we would continue our day with the weather getting worse. The temps were dropping, wind blowing harder, and raining. From the breakaway at 1:40 Sulphur Bend Woodman GSP male and Emmet Sasser. Bracemate Blair's Witch Project setter male and Tom Waite. Woody and Guy would both go through the gate together with Woody going right Guy going left. At 1:46 3/4 way through the second field Woody locked up. Guy came up from the back and stopped 60 yd away for a beautiful back. With Woody standing some extra pressure the wet bird was produced. Guy was picked up for manors. Woody would continue hitting the right spots with great casts. We would catch up to him standing in the brush pile. The bird was moved, and they continued on. Woody continued reaching to the front in the harsh conditions. Emmet would find Woody standing and produced another bird at 2:30. Emmet would send Woody one more time and with 2 minutes left in the brace would be locked up again. The pair of bobs were produced with Woody staunch on point.
What the weather getting worse Garry Malzone would scratch his 13th brace Indian Creek Cactus pointer male.
