This year's Missouri State Classic was held on the Robert E Talbott, Missouri Dept. of Conservation grounds near Mount Vernon Missouri. The trial ran from February 5th to the 7th. We had typical Missouri weather to start but ended with freezing temps and ice.
The Bob Catlett Open Shooting Dog Classic was the first class to start the trial. Under the watchful eyes of Ken Chenoweth and James Ogle we turned them loose. Six out of the 14 entered would finish with bird work. Top finisher was Indian Creek Bocephus. Bo is a pointer male handled by Garry Malzone. Bo ran the edge of the fields and hunted the likely bird spots. Bo was found standing rock solid four separate times for his handler. Bo had an outstanding forward race, bird work, and handled great. Erin's Deja Vu setter female was handled by Garry Malzone, earned 2nd place. Bess and Garry handled the course with ease. Bess used her exceptional nose having seven finds finishing a flawless performance. With her great effort she was the only dog with a wild covey. Steve Morgan came from Oklahoma to run Jimfork's Black River, pointer male. Hawk was in the 5th brace and hunted the area hard. With changing scenting conditions Hawk still pinned down three separate peaces of bird work to earn the third spot in the stake.
The Open Derby would start Saturday morning at 7:30 A.M. with six entries. 1st place would go to Indian Creek Miss California handled by Garry Malzone. Callie is a strong pointer female and had two broke finds. Bracemate Jimfork's Hawkeye Buck pointer male handled by Kenny Snow was awarded 2nd place. Buck had one find and a strong race to the front. Kenny Snow would handle Styx, a pointer male to 3rd place. Styx had two broke finds and handled great for his handler. This Derby class will move up to next year shooting dog class with success.
The Open Puppy class is always fun to watch. These wild and crazy pups grow up and learn how to start hunting. With a good talented class of eight starters the puppy class would be won by Jack Glover's male setter Glover's Flintstone. Flint hunted hard to the front and found one bird, with Jack flushing the bird for Flint. Indian Creek's Sprout pointer female, handled by Garry Malzone would have a great run with one find. New comer to the NBHA Tim Baker would place his Setter male, Nottingham's Mr. Tom to the third spot in the stake. Tom also had one find and stood tall on his bird.
The Amateur Shooting Dog started Saturday after our lunch break, cooked and served by Kristi Ogle. It would finish up Sunday morning. With judges Garry Malzone and Jillian Stuhr in the saddle and under harsh freezing conditions we started our shooting dog. 1st place dog Craig's Runin Roxie pointer female was handled by owner Craig Hiatt. Roxie hunted the edge with class and pointed with style. She would end up with two pieces of birdwork and a great forward race. Our 2nd place dog would be Ken Sauer's male pointer KC's Sydney Bertron. Sid would have finds on the back side of the course with a strong forward race. 3rd place was Penrosa Hidncash Setter male owned and handled by Tim Penn. Cash would have four finds hunting with style and class throughout the hour.
The Larry Carpenter Amateur Derby classic had cancellations before the draw and had four entries. Lindsey Wagner handled her classy Setter male, Mo's Blazing Star to 1st place. Axl had bird work and hunted to the front with speed and style. KC's Pressure Gage pointer female handled by Ken Sauer finish 2nd. Gal would finish the 30 minutes with three finds and hunting forward.
The Larry Carpenter Puppy Classic would finish our trial with 10 entries. This was a tough class with a ton of talent. Sulphur Bend Firestorm, German Shorthair male handled by Dewayne Langley received 1st. Freckles tore through the course looking for birds. This pup was on a mission hunting the open grasslands. Firestorm had a find on top of the hill behind the pond, he stood like a pro, until the bird flushed on its own. Jack Glover's super nice Setter male Glover's Flinstone moved through the country effortlessly. Flint would be rewarded with multiple pieces of birdwork and 2nd place for his efforts. Receiving 3rd place was Carpenters Blue Moon handled by our youngest handler, Will Carpenter. Will shows the love of these dogs like mentor and grandfather Mr. Larry Carpenter.
In closing I would like to thank everyone for their entries in supporting this trial. Judges Ken Chenoweth, James Ogle, Garry Malzone, Jillian Stuhr.
