German Shorthaired Pointer club of Iowa trial results

Pictured is Three Kansas Takin a Chance, the 1st place Open Shooting Dog and 1st place Amateur Shooting Dog winner.

The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Central Iowa held its fall walking trial Saturday October 10 at
the Dude Hoehns/Wayne Langstraat farms near Columbia, Iowa. After a spring of cancelled trials
secondary to coronavirus outbreaks, it was nice to see old friends and make a few new acquaintances.
The weather was beautiful for handlers and judges, with highs near 80 in the afternoon, but a little
warm for the canine athletes. We were blessed with some great judges for the weekend. Bruce Heiter
and Rick Hastings judged the Amateur Shooting Dog stake, Barry Steinmetz and Ken Windom judged the
Open Shooting Dog Stake. Interestingly, both groups of judges chose the same two dogs for the top
spots in both shooting dog stakes! The dogs were consistent performers this weekend and the four
judges all seemed to concur. John Markhams strong, forward running pointer male Three Kansans
Takin A Chance and Tim Penns flashy setter male Penrosa Hidncash took first and second respectively
in both the amateur and open events. Cajuns HiNs Two Moons, GSP M, took third in the open
shooting dog, and Sundance Sensation, GSP M, took third in the amateur shooting dog.

The Open Derby had 14 entries with Stephen Meyers handling Autumnwoods Open Range, shorthair
male to first place with a nice race and derby birdwork. First time trailer, young Annabelle Kennedy got
the stylish Hackberrys Pacman Rock around for second. After one run, Annabelle can say shes placed
at every trial shes ever entered! Third place went to Outbaks How You Doin? (Joey), GSP-M charge of
Larry and Sean Bradleys. Joey has an incredible motor and looks to have a very bright future.

The Open Puppy was won by Outbaks How You Doin, the Bradleys hard charging shorthair mentioned
above. This year, the NBHA lost time-honored patron and setter breeder/enthusiast Larry Carpenter.
Larrys legacy lived on this weekend, with his grandson Trenton Pace placing second with his setter
female Grace, and Larrys son, Kevin Carpenter placing third with the setter male Carpenters Touch of
Class. It was a good day for the Carpenter family! Two of Larrys other grandchildren- Will and Bryant
Carpenter ably ran puppies as well. We miss Larry, but were thrilled to have his family here running
dogs!

As always, its hard to put on a trial without a lot of help. COVID regulations made food prep easier- as
there was no food prep everyone brought their own meal. Chairman Jeff Wallace planted birds as well
as kept things on schedule. Keith Thompson kept all the handlers/dogs pointed in the right direction
with separate events of the trial being run on two separate courses. Were lucky to have private land to
run on and thank Dude and Rachel Hoehns, along with Wayne and Jo Langstraat for being gracious
hosts. The NBHA would like to thank Garmin and Purina for their sponsorships. We raffled off gift
certificates to Gun Dog Supply, and certainly thank them for their support as well. We hope that
everyone had a fun weekend, and look forward to seeing you all through the rest of this season.
