Dewey Mullins Open SD Classic/Derby Classic

April 2, 2014 we started running the derby classic. Weather conditions were bad with rain all day long on Wed. and Thurs. The course was in great shape at Miller Welch except for the mud. The dogs had to dig hard in the mud and rain but with group of quality dogs judges Vernon Vance and Kelly Sheppard had little trouble picking winners. Thanks to Jim Humphrey and everyone for making this derby classic possible. This may have been the top derby stake of the year with the 15 entries 11 or 12 of them were in the top 25 in NBHA point standings at the time of the trial.

Winner was Sand Mountain Will owned by Mike Otinger and handled by Oscar Whitt. Will set a standard early on with a beautiful ground race and bird work at a shooting dog level. Runner up was Kimbreys Carolina Belle owned by Tommy Kimbrey and handled by Jerry Raynor. Great job by Curly looking through the country with purpose and handling birds like a pro. Thanks everyone but especially to Oscar and Jerry for bringing their fine string of derby contenders.

The Dewey Mullins Open Shooting Dog Classic got started Thurs. with rains subsiding but still mud knee deep. We want to thank Jim White and John Russell for giving their time to look at this outstanding bunch of shooting dogs. With the reining NBHA national open shooting dog champion and many more champion dogs in attendance competition was tough.

Winner Rocking Kate a beautiful black and white pointer female owned by Moehill Kennels and handled masterful by Jerry Raynor Kate did a great job always looking in the right places and when she did find birds she was breathtaking.

Second place was Cock-N-Fire Maggie a pretty black and white pointer female owned by Allen Johnson and handled by Jerry Raynor. Maggie did a super job there could not have been a great deal of difference between her and the winner. Third place Rocky Hollow Big Time Pointer male owned and handled by Brian Casey. Big Time was knocking on the door with a limb find and tearing up the country. Again thanks to everyone. There were 5 or 6 dogs that could have placed but we only had 3 places to give. Each one of these 5 or 6 dogs ran championship type races that anyone would be proud of.

The judging seminar Fri. night went great with Jim Crouse, Jim White, Dewey Mullins, John Russell, and Georgie Casey on the panel.
