2014 Spring SW Missouri Walking FTC
I would like to start by thanking our sponsors and all involved. The NBHA and AFTCA are great organizations that help support our lifestyle. Thank you, to Purina Pro Plan for their generous support to the NBHA. Thanks to Gun Dog Supply for agreeing to support the NBHA by donating gift certificates to our trial. Thanks to S&H Farm Supply a local company that donated two Kyote UTV's. One was used by my wife Kristi, and daughter Ivy to keep dogs on the line and picked up as needed. The other was used by my son James to plant birds all day. The MDC for allowing us to run on Talbot Wildlife Area, and all that volunteered to help judge.
Our forecast was looking great for Saturday but Sunday was looking bad with ice on the way and snow on top of that. One of our judges Alan Worth was locked in Iowa under ice. He did not give up, we were in contact on the phone until 10:30 pm Friday night when he finally decided he was going to be unable to make it. Saturday brought a beautiful morning to run dogs with temps in the high 30's and rising fast. Francis Bush brought friends from Pittsburgh, KS to ride in the gallery and also did some scouting for us. Tony Chism was in the saddle all day as one of our judges - for the 2nd year in a roll.
We had 44 dogs to run all weekend and our brake away was scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Larry Carpenter would be the first to fill in for our missing judge. He and Tony started with the Open Shooting Dog. Two a GSP male would take 1st with handler Tom Woods, and Chance a very nice Setter male would be placed 2nd handled by Jason Patty. Bob Barker would judge the Open Derby with Tony. Jason Patty would handle his female Setter Ann to 1st, and Larry Carpenter placed his two Setters Duke and Dusty to 2nd and 3rd. The Open Puppy would be judged by Tony Chism and Jim Ogle. Joe Zimmer placed his two Setters Jim & Ted to 1st and 2nd and Bob Barkers Setter Sis would be placed 3rd. Six year old Brooklyn Patty received a medal for handling Lady a Tri colored Setter to a special call back for judgment.
Soup and Chili was set up and served by Kristi and Ivy for lunch. My brother Jerry brought in a crock of Jambalaya which didn't last very long. We also sold tickets for a 50/50 pot. With the afternoon sun warming us we knew we couldn’t break for long if we wanted a chance to finish. With a short break and bellies full we headed back to the course. The decision had been made earlier that morning to run all braces we could with bad weather on the way. We were able to run all classes except the Amateur Shooting Dog (judgment ceases at flush) which would be cancelled for Sunday.
Bob Barker again stepped in to judge with Tony Chism, judging the Amateur Shooting Dog. They would place only two dogs with Rusty handled by Larry Carpenter 1st and Swift handled by Jason Patty 2nd. Tony Chism and Jim Ogle would judge the final two stakes Amateur Derby and Amateur Puppy. The Amateur Derby had some very nice setters with Jason Patty's Lucy 1st and Larry Carpenter placing Duke and Dusty 2nd and 3rd. The Amateur Puppy was finished just in time daylight fading fast. Joe Zimmer placed his two Setters Ted & Jim 1st and 3rd with Larry and Paige placing 2nd. This puppy group will be very exciting next year as Derbies.
