2011 NBHA Mid South Region Championship

Eboga Go Go Ann, a coming eight year old pointer female, owned by Charles Aston and handled by Ken Tolbert, was named the 2011 NBHA Mid South Region Champion. Ann was last years RU and Mr. Charles told her to try harder this year and she wouldn't have to stand down wind of the champion when she got her picture made, it worked. Ann ran in the first brace ,with a frost you could have tracked a rabbit in. Ann ran to the front and had nine finds, always to the front and going forward. She also had a clean stop to flush to add to her performance.

The runner up was Maddie Morgan owned by Dr. L.K. Lewis and handled by Oscar Whitt. Maddie ran in the second brace and did a very nice job of running a strong race with two really nice limb finds, one as she was rounding the field in plain sight, and a real good stop to flush. Alas, three finds and a stop to flush wasn't enough to move a nine find performance of the champion.

There were twelve open shooting dogs drawn and twelve ran,we would like to have had at least twelve more. The Championship was judged by Edwin Cooley of Arab, AL and Don May of Warrior, AL. These two gentlemen have had a many years of experience with bird dogs and horses. Edwin runs mostly in NBHA and Don usually runs All Age dogs, they both know field trial dogs and did a good job, our thanks go out to them.

The accompanying Open Derby was judged by Brud Powell of Arab AL and Ken Tolbert of Oneonta AL, they need no introduction to the field trial folks, Ken is a professional who has developed and campaigned NBHA dogs all over the country. Brud has a big list of all trials both NBHA and Horseback. I don't know what we would do if it weren't for these men, they are always willing to help, and also judged the Amateur Shooting Dog. The winner of the Open Derby was Keith Cooley's little pointer female Dream, handled by his dad Edwin. Dream hunted hard and pointed six birds with good derby manners and looked good. Slab Creek Jack was second with a really strong derby race and one good find, third was young puppy age pointer female named Millie with three finds,. Millie got hot and slowed down the last ten minutes, but she has a bright future. Jack and Millie are both owned by Mike Otinger and handled by Oscar Whitt.

The Amateur Shooting Dog drew eight entries and was hotly contested. The winner emerged as Shadow's Frigadiare owned and handled by Edwin Cooley. Fridge ran hard and really looked good on his six finds and a real pretty back. Sand Mountain Spirit was second with a really nice ground race and seven finds, she is owned by Mike Otinger and handled by Bruce Norris . Third was Attitudes Royal with about ten finds but her race was not as strong as Fridge or Spirit.

We have a lot of people to thank for their time and efforts, starting with Ken Tolbert and his family for permitting the use of his training grounds, club house and dog wagon. Also, Mr. Charles Aston for keeping dogs on line using his Kawasaki mule to pick up dogs and handlers,. Pat Whitt made homemade potato soup and cornbread on Friday along with chili and sandwiches on Saturday. Her homemade cookies were on hand both days.

Our many thanks got to our sponsors, we could not get along without them, Purina gave 450 pounds of dog food to the champion and 225 pounds to the runner up along with coupons to all winners. I personally want to thank them for their fine product, all our dogs look and feel good, too good sometimes!

Thanks to Tri-Tronics for the training collar to the champion, and their fine equipment. Gun Dog Supply gave us 3 gift certificates for $25 each, that were drawn for. Christie Enterprise also donated certificates to the winners.

Thanks again to everyone and we will be looking forward to see everyone in January when we hold the Amateur Invitational, come join us well have a good time.
Oscar Whitt
