Dewey Mullins Open SD Classic/Derby Classic
April 2, 2014 we started running the derby classic. Weather conditions were bad with rain all day long on Wed. and Thurs. The course was in great shape at Miller Welch except for the mud. The dogs had to dig hard in the mud and rain but with group of quality dogs judges Vernon Vance and Kelly Sheppard had little trouble picking winners. Thanks to Jim Humphrey and everyone for making this derby classic possible. This may have been the top derby stake of the year with the 15 entries 11 or 12 of them were in the top 25 in NBHA point standings at the time of the trial.

2014 NBHA Western Regional Championship LBJ Grasslands, TX
Entries were small this year but all of us had one thing in common. We wanted to spend time in the field with our dogs and have a good time. The Grasslands can be a wonderful venue but this year the National Forestry Service really messed this up. They double booked the property with a marathon run that had some 300 runners. We saw runners all day long it seemed like. This created an issue when we were five minutes in to each brace there seemed to be joggers hauling our dogs off. Some dogs fell victim to this but we seemed to make the best of it. The scouts had their hands full. Its a walking trial and the dogs know to go with folks on foot.

2014 NBHA National Free for All Championship
The original plans were for this event to start on Wednesday March 5th and conclude on Saturday the 8th with our National Open Championship starting on the following Tuesday. It seems that the global warming seemed to have not cooperated with us having wind, rain, and sleet, ice, and snow as far south as Houston, TX. We were unable to depart on Monday as planned from freezing rain in Houston, TX. Departure moved to Tuesday after lunch after the weather warmed up and the ice on the road had melted. Arriving late to Arkansas with the roads in Arkansas starting to freeze back up were not in too bad of shape. It seems that everyone arriving had delays with the weather and road construction on I40 thankfully all arrived safely.

NBHA Midwest Region Championship
The NBHA Midwest Regional CH was concluded on April 12th, 2014 at the Greenwood Pointe Shooting Preserve near New Franklin, MO. The trial was hosted by the Missouri Bird Hunters Association. This Championship was originally scheduled for Feb. 7 and after two postponements due to heavy snow, ice and single digit temperatures, April 11 was agreed upon. The weather was certainly better for the handlers but probably not for the dogs as it reached the 70's both days along with sun and wind.
